AB OBJECTIVE: To analyze dynamics of registration of anti-HIV positives in
the past nine years, to see percentage of transmission from asymptomatic
to symptomatic state and to predict a future trends of HIV infection in
Croatia. METHODS: The study population comprised about 14,000
individuals attending our Hospital. All sera were tested for anti-HIV
with ELISA and all positive or borderline results were verified with
western blot. RESULTS: Total number of anti-HIV positives during the
period of 9 years is 119. Their structure according to risk groups are
as follows: homo/bisexuals 38 (31.9%), IV drug abusers 21 (17.7%),
haemophiliacs 13 (10.9%), heterosexuals 26 (21.9%), sexual partners of
anti-HIV positives 14 (11.8%), blood transfusion 1 (0.8%) and unknowns 6
(5.0%). Dynamics of their registration was roughly linear-every year new
positives approximately 13.2. 19.1% of anti-HIV positive asymptomatic
persons transit to AIDS. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Absolute number of
anti-HIV positives in Croatia is relatively low. Taking together with
sexual partners of anti-HIV positives, heterosexuals dominate among
anti-HIV positives. Based on its yearly linear increase it is not easy,
to predict its trends in the future.
